If you have a friend that knows her, get him or her to introduce you. If you don’t have any common friends, take a deep breath and introduce yourself. If she's in your math class, for example, ask to borrow a piece of paper. After she responds, say, "By the way, my name’s Garrett, what’s yours?"
Now that you’ve been introduced, keep the ball rolling. Smile and say, "Hi," when you see her in the hallway at school. Engage her in conversation. Have fun. Don’t try too hard. Just stay relaxed and let the discussion happen. Here are some ideas to get a conversation started:
- "Did you see Lady Gaga’s new music video? How do you think they got her costume to light up like that?" (It can be fun to talk about something you’ve both experienced, like a show or video.
- "How’d your team do last night?" (Ask about her activities. It’s shows you’re interested in what she’s doing.)
- "How’d you do on that math homework?" (This shows your willingness to help out if it’s needed.)
- "Can you believe I showed up at 4 o’clock this morning to watch for meteors with Mr. Peck’s science class? On a cloudy morning!" (Making light of yourself shows you’re relaxed and approachable and don’t take things too seriously.)
